Premium Satellite Internet Rolls Out With Both Free and Paid Access Options

Copa Airlines is the first airline in the world to launch a paid pricing model for in-flight Wi-Fi with Starlink, changing the way passengers are able to experience the popular satellite internet service in flight. Until now, airlines that offered Starlink connectivity generally provided it free of charge to all passengers or to members of their loyalty programs.

The Panama-based carrier recently launched its first Starlink-equipped aircraft and confirmed that internet access will be available through different access levels. Although a few travelers will be able to use Wi-Fi for free, others will have to buy their own during the flight.

Who Will Get Free Wi-Fi?

Copa Airlines says Starlink Wi-Fi will be free for Business Class passengers and users in the airline’s ConnectMiles PreferMember Gold, Platinum, and Presidential tiers. In addition, travelers who already have eligible Starlink Residential or Starlink Roam subscriptions will also receive free onboard internet access.

Passengers who do not fall into these categories can still use the high-speed internet service by purchasing access through Starlink’s onboard portal during their flight. The airline has not yet announced detailed pricing for paid access.

A New Approach to In-Flight Connectivity

Starlink has quickly become one of the most talked-about in-flight internet services because it delivers fast, low-latency connectivity using a network of low-Earth orbit satellites. Many airlines have advertised the service as free for passengers. Copa making the move to paid access marks a clear departure from that practice.

The airline says passengers will be able to browse the internet, stream videos, send messages, work online, and stay connected throughout their journey with a significantly improved onboard experience.

First in Latin America

Copa Airlines is also making history by becoming the first airline in Latin America to introduce Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet. The service will debut this year, with installations on the airline’s current fleet of Boeing 737s gradually extending over time.

The airline says it should increase its passengers’ perception of the travel experience and meet the growing demand for broadband connectivity while in the air.

What This Means for Travelers

Acknowledgement of the Starlink arrangement is a significant improvement for many customers, given that Copa didn’t offer onboard Wi-Fi before. Now, passengers can use a high-speed Internet connection that allows video streaming, business meetings, messaging apps, and browsing throughout their flight.

Unlike many other airlines using Starlink, certain Copa passengers will need to pay for the service unless they’re traveling from a premium cabin or have elite status or a qualifying Starlink subscription.
